TRAGEDY TURNS TO BLESSINGS

Friendship, the hard identity of Love,
Heaven brings life, love is victory!
Just trust Him, He will bring a good morning when you have
Storm in life, difficult situation, dark and inaccessible path!!!

Santanu brought up in Rishra, Rail Park, and Moitrayee brought up in Lilua-Para, a place just next to Rail Park .

Back in those days, Santanu formed a musical group named as ‘Melody’ where Ruma was a lead singer. Ruma became well known singer and was a part of their musical group. Ruma’s songs were also telecast in television channels.
For twelve long years, the team effort of Melody was displayed in various places of West Bengal and South India including Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata.

Moitrayee’s nickname was Ruma and she was more popular in the name; Ruma, in the locality.

The time came, when Ruma’s parents started searching for a suitable person for her marriage as per Indian tradition. Several days passed searching and Ruma somehow didn’t like any of them. Santanu was also involved in searching the desired person as a good friend. Ruma rejected one after one with nominal causes.
One day Santanu asker her – tell me exactly what kind of guy do you really like, how many more guys will we try to find for you?
Ruma, answered: just like you!

It was quite unexpected answer for Santanu. He went home, told his mother about what Ruma said. His mother Priti aunty was such a talented woman, I can’t describe about her now but will tell another time.
Anyway, Aunty Priti went to Ruma’s house with a marriage proposal. With the full consent of both families Ruma and Santanu got married. Both of them spent a happy married life with lots of happy memorable days!

Four years later, Ruma became pregnant and everyone was very happy…
In the first month, during normal check-up, it was found that there was a tumour along with the fetus inside Ruma’s womb!

For two months, despite of many attempts, no good results were found!
Exactly three months later, it was decided that if the tumor would have removed from the body, the baby would be lost, which was very much necessary for Ruma’s life.
Hence, the operation was done as Ruma was more important to Santanu than anything.

But sadly, Ruma was diagnosed with cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma…
Ruma was alive for twenty-two months after the operation. During those days she had gone through different kinds of sufferings – physically, mentally, socially and spiritually and Santanu tried to be with her and nurse her throughout the journey, whole-heartedly, leaving his job!
Finally, Ruma died in 28th October, 2000! The shadows of deep mourning came in two families and across the neighbourhood!

After Ruma’s death in 2000, Santanu’s spiritual mum and dad in Australia Mr. and Mrs. Bill and John Grasser were fascinated by Santanu’s nursing to Ruma. They said, “You have to serve many thousands of Ruma.” You may be the right person to study about palliative care.

Thereafter, Santanu moved to Australia, in 2001 to study! He returned with a diploma in palliative care in 2002 and founded Ruma Abedona Hospice (Abedona means ‘without pain’). Later again in 2007to 2009 he went to Australia to do a bachelor’s degree in palliative care for more help to the society. The work is still going on today.

In 2013, this hospice was collaborated with Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute.
The hospice is growing fast and now looking forward to inpatient setup…
