A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO PALLIATIVE CARE

This is an extremely crucial time for the world. People are started getting use to with the medical jargons called Corona virus, social isolation, quarantine and lot more. India’s all over literacy rate is 74.04%, where Southern part takes the most and state like us West Bengal ranked 20th among 36 states.
It has become interesting to see that how these medical jargons play a huge role in the society like ours. When the lockdown phase started here, we witnessed people are fighting to each other due to panic of Corona virus. Neighbours started behaving rude to each other. Also, this is quite obvious that people in a developing country like us get influenced by different medias, news channels, newspapers, etc. It was interesting to see that many people choose to panic themselves being influenced by different news that continuously popped up in some medias, than being encouraged to have proper awareness for the disease Corona.
In this situation we got a call from a neighbourhood that there was an advanced pregnant lady with having a very poor financial back ground, whose husband stays in other state for work. Her husband was not able to return to his own home town due to lockdown for corona virus pandemic situation. The lady lives on her own with a 5-year-old daughter and desperately wants to go to her maternal place to get necessary assistance during this advanced stage of pregnancy. Due to total lockdown situation it was nearly impossible for her to arrange anything to travel back to her maternal place, which was nearly 3 hours journey via road.
Now the big question arises – will she able to travel back to her maternal place? She searched for help everywhere but failed to get any possible solution…
Incidentally, Ruma Abedona Hospice got the news and got involved as a part of palliative care service even though it was not a case of critical illness but a critical situation where there was no solution. We almost converted our car to a mobile labour room with having two mid wives and took her to her maternal place. All maternal neighbourhood delighted while we reached and thanked us in in their own way. The good news is she delivered a baby boy within 6 days after she reached home. What a joy!
Now her mum in law is our patient who has stage IV cervical cancer.
